Every year on the immediately preceding Sunday of Makar Sankranti (i.e. the Sunday just before the date when the Sun is about to enter the sign of Capricorn as per Indian Astrological / Sidereal calendar), Swaadhyaaya Bhavan Ashram (based at Mahalaxmi Nagar, Maheshwar) organizes Mahaamrityunjaya Rath Yaatraa in the town of Maheshwar. (Please note that since currently Makar Sankranti falls on 15th January, the day of Yaatraa i.e. the immediately preceding Sunday falls between 7th to 14th January)
This Mahaamrityunjaya Rath Yaatraa was initiated by Shri Harivilas Aasopaa for the welfare of humanity, and is known to be the first of its kind in the world. The yaatraa intends to invoke blessings of Ayurved Murti Bhagwaan Sadaashiv Mahaamrityunjaya (who is regarded as the primordial and supreme doctor), and it starts from Swaadhyaaya Bhawan Ashram and culminates at the banks of the holy river Narmada. The objective of welfare of humans is not fulfilled at the expense of animals, and the Rath (i.e. Chariot) in which deity of Bhagwaan Mahaamrityunjaya is placed is drawn exclusively by devotees participating in the yaatraa.
There are numerous benefits of participating in the Yaatraa; foremost of them all being Sansaar Vyaadhi Bheshjam i.e. ultimate cure from the ailment which afflicts us through attachment to this world. The phrase “sarva rog moola – bhava rog” sensitizes humankind that attachment to this world is root cause for every disease; and the grace of Bhagwaan Mahaamrityunjaya can alleviate this disease by providing “param kalyaan” (i.e. realization and ultimate welfare) to those who surrender themselves to him. The benevolence of Bhagwaan Mahaamritunjaya also helps individuals attain the four goals of human incarnation viz. Dharma, Artha, Kaama, and Moksha.
